Fields of Learning and Scope of Practice
in Modern Osteopathy
The subject of Osteopathy is the mechanical expression of all tissues and organs in stability and dynamics, in growth and development, and in health and disease. The task of Osteopathy is to diagnose, interpret, and treat dysfunctional states of activity (hypo-activity, non-regulated hyperactivity) through manual manipulation.
The therapeutic process in Osteopathy is guided by the applied biomechanics and physiology of states of tissue activity in health and disease. Experience and informed intuition plays a role in translating knowledge into clinical application and in transforming unconscious into conscious knowledge. Finally, skills and empathy in shaping the therapeutic process and relationship lead to a successful and effective treatment. At the center of the osteopathic approach is the path to self-regulation as a potential for self-healing. This includes a fundamental understanding of the human condition including the ability to deal with the forces of self-destruction.
Based on these fundamental assumptions, Osteopathy strikes a balance between the natural science of the medical body (biomechanical physiology and pathophysiology, developmental biology and neuroscience) and the sciences of the humanities, that deal with embodiment of the experienced body (social anthropology, phenomenology, psychoanalysis).

Standard Curriculum for a 4-Year Program
in Modern Osteopathy
Author: Peter Levin D.O.
The degree program in Modern Osteopathy provides a comprehensive overview of Osteopathy, covering all fundamental aspects: from basic osteopathic knowledge to the practice of specific techniques, from osteopathic applications of medical knowledge to current research. It includes independent osteopathic manual diagnosis, an osteopathic interpretation of signs and symptoms, and a path from clinical reasoning to therapy. A culture of critical self-reflection and interdisciplinary discourse contributes to the professional, technical, and personal development of students within the framework of a university-style education.
The program qualifies graduates, on the basis of their license to practice medicine, to work independently in practices and clinics. It is compatible with international osteopathic programs within and outside Europe.
